Northwest Missouri State men's basketball is on the way back to the NCAA Division 2 Elite Eight after a stunning 91-86 win over Northern State in overtime Tuesday night.
The Bearcats (25-2) trailed by 11 points with three minutes remaining and it was a 10-point deficit with just over two minutes to play. But Northwest didn't quit.
Trevor Hudgins willed the Bearcats back scoring 11 of the final 12 for Northwest in regulation to knot the game at 79-79.
Once it reached overtime, Northwest, the second-ranked team in the region, outscored Northern State, the top-seed, 12-7 to close out the win.
Byron Alexander earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the NCAA Central Region Tournament. Alexander put up a career-high 21 points on 6-6 shooting, five rebounds and three steals.
Hudgins scored 27 of his 29 points after halftime.
Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins also landed on the all-tournament team with Alexander. Hawkins finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Northwest now moves onto Evansville, IN for the NCAA National Quarterfinals March 24. Seeding and matchups will be announced at a later date.
